What would a blog look like offline: Interim Day with RCA Students

Barking Meta RCA Interim Day 101208IMG_0178

Yesterday Sarah Butler & I went to the interim day for the Royal College of Arts students that we've been working with. Essentially it was a day of workshops where the students gave brief presentations of their work and discussed a what form a publication documenting the process could take.

Here are some questions that stuck with me throughout the day:

What would a blog look like offline?

Can you create a fictional regeneration organisation?

What was missing?

Where does the publication live?

How do you write about design?

Is is coffee or a beverage made from roasted beans, incased in a cup made of white paper?

Parkour, Gaming & Racial Stereotypes - New Projects, New Visions.

Mirror's Edge Screenshot

Since I've been working on the Comfort Zone project, I've been noticing more articles, programmes and books on parkour and free-running. Last night I watched Quantum of Solace and saw a few familiar moves. There's been quite a lot of excitement around the game Mirror's Edge, a parkour computer game, following an Asian-American courier called Faith as she travels around the city. And as with most computer games, there are conversations around race and gender stereotypes and how they are played out in the game narrative. Latoya Peterson over at Racialicious has written a round up.

'what the hell is this?' | Art, Science, Inner City Footballers

market road taster

I'm sick! I admit it. Looks like the winter wind has given me a low blow. To be honest, this has been coming on for a couple of weeks. Last week I thought it was gone but I've been doing a couple of outdoor workshops and that was the deciding factor. The workshops this week were taster sessions, trying to get teenage footballers interested in two projects:

1. Comfort Zone - exploring the fear through science and art through parkour.

2. Snapshot - an arts project working with young people from four estates in Islington.

Over the last few years, I've run quite a few workshops but I still get a little nervous before each one. There's always the fear that the people you're trying to engage will turn around and say 'what the hell is this?'. Generally that doesn't happen, people usually come to the session because they're interested and up for it. I'm happy that was the case this week. Last night's Comfort Zone workshop we had a group of guys create a short dance, mixing in parkour moves too. In the new year, we'll be back with a series of workshops generating artwork for an event at the Emirates stadium next year. On the way home, I had a great conversation with dancer Kate Scanlan, all about how arts and sports can totally change lives. I'm looking forwards to the new year.

Last days at the BLC

Originally published on the Barking Metamorphosis blog

My time at the BLC is fast coming to an end. Friday is the last that I'll actually be writing in the building. I'm putting the finishing touches on a piece that links all of the chairs together, a kind of fictional exhibition curation. Over the last couple of weeks, I've been arriving at the BLC in daylight and leaving as the sun is shutting up shop. Looking in the opposite direction of the BLC entrance, you can see the town hall and the brilliant changing colours throughout the day. I'll miss this.

When your heart speaks...

Yemisi Blake's Poem - Reflection

"When your heart speaks, take good notes" Judith Adams.

I really needed to hear this today. I heard it listening to podcast from Seattle Public Library. During the past few weeks, I've been thinking about what sound my heart makes and how I'm recording it. The metaphor of creativity and emotion coming from the heart is an ancient one, though most probably useful in that it's stuck around for so long. But does it defeat the purpose sometimes, do we personalise our creativity to the extent that we talk ourselves out of doing or making things, taking good notes? I know I do sometimes. I've recently taken up journaling again. Mainly to capture all of the thoughts that I can't put on the blog, but also to try and take 'good notes'. This year has gone by so quickly and I think my heart is saying 'slow down cowboy!'
